Terre & cendre

vers l’humus

There is such a discord between man and nature, they now mostly live as enemies. However, for some, the nature-traveler, the simple cheesemaker, the humble hunter, the mysterious creatures of the night who turn out to be an owl, nature has become something more, indeed, they feel an ever-growing sense of union with its own sacred dimension. From now on, one can tell that the trees, even cut down to a stump represents to the watchful eye an essence of what was, but also of what might still be. The stump is only part of a long cycle where all things move towards their ends to be renewed. Now, one believes that a tree in such a state carries essentially the seeds of the morrow, however, it seems far-fetched to some, but one might add that these seeds are not necessarily of a tangible nature. To explain further, they carry invisibly the essence of the plant, but how can such a tiny seed give expression to a whole forest. Then, further down the way, other seeds are planted, and they too will grow, that is, a whole new forest might be created once more. Thus, if there were no stumps, there would be no new forest. Furthermore, once the new seeds sprout, they sometimes do with the help of a stump, and so, in this way, the stump helps new life on the spot rather than by disintegrating to enrich the soil.

The trees, ever-watchful, are catching a sight of us, can we perceive them in our own hearts? And then in the seeds of nature, can we perceive, beyond a mere growth system, the whole imagination of nature? And in the stump, is it possible to see farther than a death to the illuminating presence of God in everything? Therefore, let us be watchful as the forest,  guarding the sacred presence of love.
